Interview#3 Andrea Tomas Prato
How old are you?
I’m 41.Where are you from?
I’m from Tortona, near Alessandria, where I live. What kind of photographic equipment do you use?
I’m using a D700 for digital. For analogue, a Nikon fm2, a Rolleiflex medium format, a Polaroid and any camera that someone lends to me or that I find. What do you do when you are not shooting?
When I’m not shooting I work, dear me. I’m a public employee. What was the first photograph you were proud of?
Which photography. It’s hard to say. Every photo is like a son. They all stands for that moment, that place that mark a path. How much preparation is there behind your photographs?
There is the no-preparation, the no-set. I care about the person, no frills or makeup or masks, I try to reach a dialogue. I search for the truth, a photographic honesty.Have you ever done sacrifices or compromises as a photographer?
I do compromises and sacrifices in my job, but with photography - that I want to keep as a passion -, no compromises, no sacrifices, just expression. What is your safe place?
A coffee bar where I daydream, observe the hustle and bustle and make notes over a double espresso. My safe place is for sure the two-room flat where I live.Do you have any obsessions?
I don’t have any obsession. Maybe some paranoia or insecurity. Is there an artist you’ll gladly collaborate with or that you regard with esteem?
There are many artists I esteem but I don’t like collaborations. Photography is like going to the psychologist to me, and I would never do it together with someone else.▶ Your work seems to shift between fashion photography and a more independent artistic research: how important are these two parts to you?
My style is not the result of intentions, deep thinking nor anything else. I don’t know exactly what I do. I just do it. In that moment, in that situation… A sort of Dantesque journey.[If you want to see more, find him on www.andreatomas.tumblr.com]
